Our trek from Palm Springs to Las Vegas took us through the “Heart of the Mojave Desert.” It’s beautiful, but wow is it desolate. It’s also beige. We had no idea beige came in so many variations until we spent time in the desert southwest. Believe me, there are a lot of beiges.
The drive was good, but long. We covered about 300 miles. We had one potentially iffy miscalculation. We were traveling on Historic Route 66 when Other Half thought he saw a sign that read ‘Road Closed Ahead’.
Hmmm. Just a thought, maybe when you’re driving a 16-ton Big Rig you should pay attention to signs like that – especially when you can’t back up because of the tow car. Ok, I admit it, I probably should have been the one paying attention to the signs, since part of my co-pilot job description is “official sign reader.” Oops.
We got lucky. When we hit the actual closed section of the road there was a large gravel area big enough for the Big Rig to turnaround. I’m guessing we’re not the first Big Rig to poo hoo the sign. Our miscue added about 30 minutes to our “Heart of the Mojave” day.
We got into Las Vegas at dusk. We are camping at Thousand Trails Campground about 5 miles from the Strip. We are also about 5 miles from Fremont Street in “Old Las Vegas.” This is our first trip together to Vegas. Both of us have been here several times – but never together.
The best part about our Vegas trip is meeting up with friends. Two couples from our ‘Bucket Buddies’ are here through New Years. Should be fun!
