Saturday, November 8, 2014 was the first official day of our Open Road adventure. At 5:00 pm we finished downsizing by tossing several boxes and bags into our tow vehicle, the Equinox. We turned over the keys to the new owners, grabbed the dog and left our house in Oregon, OH for the last time. It’s funny, neither of us were emotional – overwhelmed and relieved is more accurate. Moving from a 3200+ square foot house into a 320 square foot motorhome required downsizing at an epic level. I viewed it as curating our crap, and boy did we have crap.
We have been on the road for just over a week. We have not gotten far. We are currently in Chattanooga TN at a Camping World complex. We are here awaiting parts. We’ve learned a few things our first week out. To start with – it doesn’t pay to be in a hurry. The harder you push the s-l-o-w-e-r things happen. My type A, less than patient husband has been doing his best to contain his inner jerk.
Secondly, we are apparently in the “Gremlin” phase of RV ownership. This was news to us. The Gremlin phase is that period of time where things fall apart without warning and for no obvious reason. To say the least it’s annoying. One of the “parts” we are waiting for is the driver’s side MCD blind that jumped off it’s bracket, barely missing Tom’s head. The gremlins are also responsible for our newly installed front AC/heat pump unit failing and our gigantic passenger side “slide out” jumping off its track. Enough already.
One more minor setback – this one in the oh sh*t category. Tom got into a tiff with a squatty little speed limit sign. The sign won. One week on the open road and we have our first official insurance claim in 30 years. Oops.
All things considered we are enjoying ourselves. Lots more to come…
