We packed up the Big Rig and left Mission Bay in San Diego to head north. The problem with heading north from San Diego is it requires driving through Los Angeles. LA traffic is notorious. When you’re traveling in a 16 ton Big Rig towing a Chevy Equinox the trek through LA takes some skill and daring. Fortunately Other Half has both.
Our goal was Stockton CA, near Brentwood CA which is sort of near San Francisco CA. My brother and his wife live in Brentwood. Two of their kids are in the San Francisco area. One of the best parts of the Big Adventure in the Big Rig is ‘parking’ our home near family.
The drive took us through mountainous terrain followed by desert followed by orchards followed by vineyards.
We also saw large expanses of flat dry land. The land looked like it had been cultivated at one point but was now barren. Dotted along the barren land were signs that read, “No Water = No Jobs” and “Congress Created Dust Bowl.” Clearly a water struggle is going on. Theses signs went on for miles and then suddenly the orchards were back in full bloom.
We arrived at River Point RV and Marina in Stockton CA and were greeted by a Mallard couple.
This place is more of a marina than a campground. The boat to camper ratio is 3 to 1. The cool part is all the campsites are on the water. The San Joaquin River to be exact. The campsites are designed for you to back in, but if you back in your windshield view is the parking lot. If you pull in, it’s the river. We pulled in – makes the Big Rig feel like a cruise ship.
Our first morning here we were surprised to see a HUGE freighter coming down the river. It came directly in front of us. At first glance the San Joaquin River does not seen big enough for the big ships. Clearly it is. I think we are going to enjoy this place.
