We started our day anxious to get back on the road. After an unplanned 10 day stay in Chattanooga TN, we were feeling restless. We left the campground about 8:30 a.m. eastern time. Our plan was to travel about 400 miles. We’ve done lots of road trips and 400 miles in a day seemed wimpy to me. But traveling in a Big Rig is a different experience, especially since the Big Rig has only one driver. I’me sure you can guess who that is.
We agreed on our route and set off. Within minutes we were in our second state, Georgia. Turns out the campground we had been staying at was half in Tennessee and half in Georgia. That was easy. Two states down, three to go.
Next came Alabama. What I noticed about Alabama was the time change from Eastern to Central. That and a very nice rest area. We had lunch at the rest area and took a break. One of the perks of living in a motorhome is your bed is never far.
The next state was Mississippi. Mississippi is one state I couldn’t misspell if I tried. Little know fact, at least little known to me – Mississippi has small deer. I spotted at dozen or more small deer before I realized they weren’t all fawns. Apparently corn isn’t as readily available in Mississippi as it is in Ohio – so the deer stay puny.
Jackson, Mississippi was our planned destination for the day, 398 miles from Chattanooga. We stopped at a Flying J plaza to diesel up. Filling up is always an anxious time for me and Rigby. She gets nervous because of all the commotion. I get nervous because we have a 100 gallon tank.
While at the Flying J, Tom managed to impress a fellow RV’er with his maneuvering skills. Rather than wait for the easy-to-access pump to open up, he pulled our Big Rig between two vehicles up to a pump with inches to spare. I kept my eyes closed the whole time.
We left the Flying J and decided to push another couple hours. That took us into Louisiana, state number five. The first sign I saw in Louisiana was to be on the lookout for Black Bear on the highway. WHAT??? Black Bear on the highway??? I spent the entire 117 miles from Jackson Mississippi to West Monroe Louisiana looking for Black Bear. Sorry to report I did not see any wildlife – unless you count the cattle truck parked next to us in the Walmart parking lot where we are spending the night.
Our miles for the day were 511. Not so wimpy after all.
