Saturday we said goodbye to the Q, Quartzsite, AZ. Our plan was to take Interstate 10W and head to San Diego. The plan was thwarted when a monster traffic jam closed the I 10W ramp out of the Q. Other Half managed to turn the Big Rig around and get us out of the stopped traffic. No small feat. Our new route took us on I 8W.
The drive out of the Q confirmed why it’s known as the ‘RV Boondocking Capital” of the world. The land surrounding the Q was full of RVs enjoying the free, or close to free camping. My plan is our next trip to the Q will include desert boondocking.
Traveling across the desert makes me realize it’s much more diverse than my midwestern background prepared me for. In the Q the desert is hard and rocky with scrubby looking trees. The further west we got the rocks became boulders and the hills became mountains. Then the course rough sand became fine and started blowing across the road.
Blowing is an understatement. The winds were crazy for a lot of the drive. Other Half got testy. Rigby and I got quiet. The drive was about 250 miles. We got to our campground mid-afternoon. We are camping at Mission Bay RV Resort in San Diego. The campground is of the blacktop variety. It’s clean, spacious and surrounded by water. I think we’ll be happy here for the next month.
