This Valentine’s Day was our 37th. As you can probably guess, after that many V-Days, our celebrations have gotten low key. That’s why I didn’t catch on when Other Half suggested we go out for clam chowder. Clam chowder is not my favorite, but he loves it and I know this. He makes it his mission to eat clam chowder in as many cities as possible. He had yet to experience clam chowder in San Diego. It was long overdue.
Of course I agreed. If a restaurant has clam chowder, you can be fairly sure they will also have fish tacos. Fish tacos are my current obsession. Win win.
We are traffic averse so I suggested we plan on lunch the next day rather than deal with rush hour traffic going to dinner. Other Half’ wasn’t having it.
Ok. I’m game.
I took the opportunity to change out of my standard attire, yoga pants and tank top. I even pulled out the make-up. It’s been months since I’ve worn make-up. If you know me, you know that’s not usual. I’ve been one of those women who wouldn’t go to the grocery store without at minimum lipstick and mascara.
(Speaking of mascara, humor me a moment. What’s up with mascara commercials featuring the likes of Katy Perry and Carrie Underwood with fine print flashing on the screen that reads Katy/Carrie are wearing lash inserts. Lash inserts? WTH? No wonder my lashes never ‘look’ as advertised.)
Other Half and I headed downtown to the San Diego Harbor. Our destination was The Fish Market. The Fish Market is located next to the USS Midway Museum. The museum is an historical aircraft carrier. It’s super impressive from the pier. We plan to tour it once walking is less of an issue for me. (Clod gene incident.)
We also got to see the famous “Kiss” statue. It’s called Unconditional Surrender. It’s a popular spot to plant one on your sweetie. We watched several couples attempt to recreate the famous pose.
A short walk from the Kiss statue is the National Tribute to Bob Hope. Bob Hope performed in hundreds of USO performances entertaining our troops. Bob is cast in life-sized bronze. It looks just like him. He is entertaining 15 other bronze statues representing service men and women from different military conflicts. It’s inspiring to see. Bob lived to be 100 years old. That’s also inspiring. He was one of my Dad’s favorite entertainers. I have lots of Bob Hope memories.
After taking in the scenery, we headed into The Fish Market, got seated quickly and proceeded to indulge. Other Half enjoyed his chowder and Dungeness Crab. I enjoyed swordfish tacos.
We had a great dinner. Other Half had to remind me it was our V-Day celebration. Guess that’s what happens when you’re working on your fourth decade of togetherness.
