Vacation in the Desert

We get asked frequently what it’s like to “be on vacation everyday.” I usually respond with how difficult it is to be in warm, sunny locales with beautiful scenery everyday. A person can only tolerate so many nice days in a row.

Just kidding. I’m a huge fan of nice days, especially when they show up in a row. And lots of sunshine is good for the soul. But really, we are not on vacation everyday, well not usually – except for the last two weeks.

IMG_0190Our good friends Ray and Kathy Crabtree joined us here at Caliente Springs in Desert Hot Springs CA. They are fellow full time RVer’s, fellow bloggers at www.rvtreehousing.com, and fellow Buckeyes. And Kathy and I are both former columnist for the same local newspaper, The Metro Press.

IMG_0214Kathy and I have tons in common – including living 24/7 in tight quarters with our spouses. Not complaining, but we were both in need of some GIRLFRIEND time!

IMG_2275The original plan was for Ray, Kathy and their two dogs, Mutten and Raven to spend a week parked next to us, and our mutt Rigby, in the desert. We quickly realized a week was not enough. Two weeks was minimum.

On day one we decided to eat our meals together. No point in both of us cooking for two and how fun to share our favorites. We searched out and shopped Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Albertsons, Vons and fresh markets. Alternating cooking was great. Most nights Kathy or I did prep and the guys took turns on the grill (not literally).

IMG_2263The two weeks included a spa day, soaks in the mineral hot springs, a country music concert, a trip to LA to visit my daughter, tours of multi-million dollar homes, numerous Starbucks and Barnes & Nobles trips (with chocolate croissants), bra shopping, nearly got stuck in the mall, TV under the stars, an off road Jeep tour, plenty of desert dog walks, German beer, Grey Goose martini’s and even a new tattoo.

And just in case it sounds like all we did was goof off, we also attended a live stream blogging conference. The only thing we didn’t do was blog.
